An Ode to the Domino
I have many feelings about the Domino silhouette, and it was Ann Mashburn’s manifesto on the Faye pant that inspired me to compose an ode of my own to this piece of clothing I’ve created.
I love this dress, and this is not some fly-by-night kind of love. In fact, I first wore the terry cloth version of this dress in Capri in the summer of 2021. You might think: ‘Hmm …2021 was years ago…. you’re still wearing and thinking about the same dress?’. The answer is yes. Let me tell you the story.
In 2020, I came across a photo of my grandma and mom taken in 1970s. Seeing my grandma’s terry cloth dress brought a rush of happy memories as I had seen her wear that dress on numerous sunny occasions. Though, as an adult, I saw the dress in a new light. I saw a simple and casual silhouette, but also one that had hints of menswear tailoring and sophistication. Also, it was terry cloth. Terry is such a transportive fabric. It takes me to the beach, to the pool, to the Miami Fountainebleau in the 60s. To note, my experience with the Fountainebleau is purely cinematic (i.e., Goldfinger).
I knew I wanted to recreate this dress and, along with it, a brand that captures this transportive, slightly nostalgic feeling. So, Cirusère was born, and I set out to bring my own interpretation of my grandma’s dress to life. I will not bore you with the details of technical specifications, or sourcing, or production, but let’s just say I realized I’m quite particular when I comes to terry cloth, and that sourcing the material took literal years (which is why I decided to create this dress in taffeta poly in the meantime, so at least I could do some testing on the silhouette). My initial dress samples in terry cloth just didn’t cut it. The loops were too long; the material looked messy. Fast forward to today and I’m delighted with the terry I’ve found. It’s Turkish and unique and luxe and you can read more about it here.
Last, as mentioned, I’ve worn variations of this dress for three summers now. I wear it everywhere, not just at the beach or poolside. It’s easy to wear, easy to wash, easy to accessorize. And, now that I have access to a terry cloth I like, I’ve considered and tested other silhouettes but there just isn’t one yet that I can convince myself is great and/or different than what’s already out there. So, until further update, I'm happily a one-dress, one-silhouette brand and, chances are, if I see you this summer, you’ll catch me sporting my creation.
